2011-12 BackPack Program Report

     The fourth year of Crete’s BackPack Program will end in May. This year we have provided a total of 89 backpacks--60 to Crete Elementary, 23 to Crete Middle School, and 6 to St. James. The Lincoln Food Bank, which purchases the food in bulk for low cost, calculates each backpack at 5 meals--so when the last distribution goes out, Crete’s program will have provided 16,020 meals for hungry families in this area.

      This year the base price of each backpack was $200.00 for a total cost of $17,800.00. Milk vouchers were included in backpacks once each month for an added cost of $2,300.00. Therefore, the total amount needed to support the program this year was $20,100.00.

       Sincere thanks to all who have supported the backpack program in whatever way. Thank you to those who have given to the program through donations. First Congregational members provided over a third of the needed funds with the rest coming from local businesses, other churches, and service groups. Thank you to the entire membership for providing space. We continue to use a previous Sunday school room as our pantry and the ARC for packing the food. Thank you to everyone who has contributed labor--especially those who have packed bags through the past year.

       The backpack program could not happen without you! Again, thanks.
